| Does anyone have the draw for the Legal Beagle ? The tournament starts on Thursday, but the BC High School website hasn't been updated from last years tournament results. |

| Here is the link to the Legal Beagle Tournament. Is the other hooplife board down? No posts in a long time. http://hsboys.bchoops.ca/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=87&Itemid=111 |

| Based on the latest AAA rankings (December 17, 2009), if I am reading it right, what a crappy and unfair draw Terry Fox has made for the Legal Beagle.
The first round winner of Terry Fox (HM) vs Walnut Grove (NR) goes straight to the semi-final. The loser of the semi-final (assume it will be Terry Fox) can finish no worse than 4th (in a 10 team tournament) even if they lose their last game (i.e. with a 1-2 record). What nonsense is this? The first round winner of Palmer (#14) vs Oak Bay (#9) does straight to the other semi-final. The first round winner of Centennial (NR) vs Burnaby South (#5) has to beat White Rock Christian (#1) in a quarter-final to get to the semi-final. The first round winner of South Kamloops (#3) vs Sir Charles Tupper (#6) has to beat Yale (#2) in the other quarter-final to get to the other semi-final.
South Kamloops, Burnaby South and Charles Tupper get screwed the most with this draw. Even with a 3-1 record (with the only loss being to White Rock Christian or Yale), the best only one of these teams can expect to finish is 5th. |

| That is the advantage of hosting and creating the draw. |

| It does call into questions the legitimacy of the Legal Beagle being the premier high school tournament in BC. No question, they do a great job in getting the best teams to participate (VC would make it very interesting). But when you design the draw in your home team's favour, it does not result in a truly competitive tournament and it denies basketball fans some great match ups. Remember, once a upon a time, Fox was a top team in BC, so it did not matter that the draw was done in their favour. But now they are a mediocre team at best.
I have done an improved draw, strictly based on the last rankings on the Basketball BC web site (Dec 17/09).
Top Half
#9 Oak Bay vs. NR Centennial - Winner Plays #1 WRCA #5 Burnaby South vs. HM RC Palmer - Winner Plays Winner of Quarterfinal Above
Bottom Half
#6 Charles Tupper vs. NR Walnut Grove - Winner Plays #2 Yale #3 South Kamloops vs. HM Terry Fox - Winner Plays Winner of Quarterfinal Above
If Higher Ranked Teams Win:
Quarterfinals - #9 Oak Bay vs. #1 WRCA - #6 Charles Tupper vs. #2 Yale
Semifinals - #1 WRCA vs. #5 Burnaby South - #2 Yale vs. #3 South Kamloops
Final - #1 WRCA vs. #2 Yale
With the current draw, the semifinal games above are played as quarterfinals.
But in the end, the top ranked teams should play in a great final. |

Such was the case last year, where Yale lost to South Kam by 4 in overtime, ended with a 3 - 1 record, and finished 5th.
The whole problem here is not how the teams were drawn, rather that there are 10 teams, not the standard 8 or 16. A ten team tournament makes for a lopsided draw, no matter what you do. |

| South Kam beat Tupper by about 15 but Tupper held the lead by 7 in the first half. Too much size to deal with on South Kam and Wagner had a monster game. Bby South continues to impress and play well as they beat Centennial by 20. Fox jumped all over Walnut Grove and were up 25 to 5 at one point, they went on to win by 30. In the last game Palmer used their speed and quickness to hold off a tough Oak Bay squad 78 to 64. We get the winner of WRCA and Bby South in one semi-final and Fox gets the winner of South Kam and Yale in the other semi-final. |

| Burnaby South looked really good and should give WRc a good game especially if they can contain Barker. Tupper ran out of gas after Liang fouled out with 5 minutes to go and could not contain the bigs of SK. SK are a very big team but will have to play more aggressively and get better play from their guards if they hope to compete with Yale. |
